The rule of thumb: if the name ends in “-ose,” “-fructan,” or reads as inulin/resistant starch, you are looking at a prebiotic. If it reads as methylcellulose or a generic “bulking agent,” you have a regularity product.
Psyllium: the useful hybrid
Psyllium (the fibre in Metamucil) deserves its own note because it sits between the two camps. It is largely a viscous, gel-forming fibre — its headline benefits are regularity and a genuine, well-evidenced effect on LDL cholesterol and post-meal glucose.
